We feed a lot of people each day, week, and month. We go through upwards of $4000 of food each week. We average about 170 meals a day plus desert and treats for the AA/NA meetings. Coffee by the canisters.
We feed the Kid’s Time program twice a week and provide snack packs to the kids on Friday. Snack packs have kid friendly food. Cans of sausages, cups of soup, microwave mac and cheese, granola bars. And we try to include sweets every week.
The shelter meals change every day. Sometimes, we get things donated, and that changes the menu. Other times, the menus is determined by sale prices. But the meals are hearty and filling. We make sure to offer at least 1 hot meal a day. Usually two. We recently upped our breakfast game. Today, we offered eggs, bacon, and toast. Yesterday was cereal.
My cooks and the cooking team work hard to prepare quality fresh food. Chopped peppers onions etc.. Tonight, the dinner is a pasta casserole with beef, pepperoni, olives etc. It looks good and taste great.
The point is it may take a village to raise a kid, but it takes a great cooking staff to feed the shelter. There is a lot of planning and work that goes into feeding so many people. All of this in what is effectively a household kitchen. We had to purchase new appliances to be able to keep up. The stove has 2 ovens. We added a second fridge. New stainless prep tables. We would love a new 3 bowl sink. The floor needs to be replaced.
The kitchen is a busy place.
Each day, we provide hope and love through many little acts. The tastiest is the meals we provided 21 times a week.
Bonus, if you know the musical that my title is from.
God loves you and so do I.
